The Rugby Airport Campaign is over. The proposal has been dropped. We can justifiably celebrate
I have learned a lot about how destructive the aviation industry is, about the poisons and carcinogens in jet exhaust, about the chronic meteorological change caused by condensation trails, and about how statistics are abused to cover up the damaging health effects of noise and pollution to those who live near airports.
Our relief is at the expense of others. Our principle arguments, that aviation should not be allowed to continue to expand unfettered, should not continue to have such massive tax advantages, have failed. At Stansted and Birmingham, and elsewhere around the country, the green light has been given to the expansion of one of the most damaging land uses, and the loss of health and quality of life of thousands of people.
Finally, our indignation at the Rugby Airport proposal's having ever been put out for consultation remains. The whole process of selecting sites was flawed, and many millions of pounds of our taxes was spent with consultants who produced a proposal which was fundamentally flawed. I do not expect any person or organisation or government department to ever be brought to account for their negligence.
